Frequently Asked Questions

What is a PPEC Facility?
A Prescribed Pediatric Extended Care (PPEC) facility provides comprehensive nursing care and therapeutic services for medically complex children in a daycare setting, allowing for specialized care outside of a hospital environment.
How does a PPEC work?
Our medical daycare provides a structured environment where children receive necessary treatment, therapies, and educational activities during daytime hours. Each child follows a personalized schedule based on their unique needs, also referred to as the Plan of Care. The Plan of care includes information that clinical staff will use to address a child’s condition, treatment plan, and goals.
Who Qualifies for PPEC Services?
Children from birth to 21 years old with complex medical conditions requiring ongoing nursing care may qualify for PPEC services. Refer to our eligibility page for a detailed list of conditions that qualify for PPEC, or contact us for a comprehensive eligibility assessment.
Why is PPEC good for my child?
PPEC offers a central location for medical care, nursing, and therapeutic services while also being a more reliable health care option than home care services. PPECs offer a child the chance to experience childhood in a safe, social setting.
How Long Can My Child Attend PPEC?
Your child can attend PPEC as long as their medical condition warrants a need for PPEC services, up until their 21st birthday. After enrollment, children are re-evaluated for PPEC authorization every 6 months. If goals aren’t met and PPEC is still needed, a new plan is submitted to insurance. Upon meeting goals, children are discharged, and we’ll help connect you with alternative services.
Can My Child Attend School and PPEC?
Yes! Your child can attend PPEC before or after school to receive nursing care and therapies. We are also able to coordinate transportation from school to PPEC to optimize the amount of time your child spends in our facility.
How Frequently Does My Child Need to Attend PPEC?
We understand that life can be busy, especially as a caretaker for a child with special needs! There is no requirement for the amount of time that your child spends at PPEC during business hours. We do ask that you send your child to PPEC at least 4 days per month, though we are happy to accommodate the schedule that best suits your needs.
